This is a special issue of the Rondeli Russian Military Digest dedicated to the Russo-Ukrainian War, composed on the basis of numerous open sources.

Russian forces failed to make progress towards Kyiv, or to continue the city’s encirclement from the west, on 2-3 March 2022. Ukrainians engaged in counterattacks, taking the town of Makariv on 2 March. On 3 March, Ukrainians attacked Russians near Ivankiv and took back Bucha. As of the late afternoon on 3 March, heavy fighting was taking place in the Bucha-Vorzel-Hostomel area.

Russians were not able to approach Kyiv from the east, with Ukrainians fighting defensive battles or counterattacking in various areas of Chernihiv Oblast and easternmost parts of Kyiv Oblast.

No major changes occurred in Sumy Oblast, with Sumy city remaining under Ukrainian control.

Russian troops suffered defeats and casualties near Kharkiv on 2 March. As of 18:00 Kyiv Time of 3 March, there did not appear to be maneuver fighting taking place in Kharkiv area. Instead, Russians kept pounding the city with artillery. On 2 March, Russians advanced in the area southeast from Kharkiv, reaching the town of Balakliya.

In the area of Severodonetsk, the town of Starobilsk was confirmed to be under the Russian control.

Mariupol was either surrounded or close to being surrounded by the Russian troops as of the afternoon on 3 March. Heavy fighting occurred near Mariupol itself, and to the north of it in the town of Volnovakha. Heavy fighting also took place to the west of Mariupol in the town of Tokmak, where Ukrainians had counterattacked the advancing Russians.

On the bank of the Dnieper River, the surrounded city of Enerhodar was attacked by the Russian forces in the late afternoon on 3 March.

Russians took the city of Kherson after street fighting on 2 March. Russian columns moved northwest of Kherson in attempt to surround the city of Mykolaiv. They made some advance, but suffered heavy casualties under Ukrainian bombardment near Bashtanka, and then met Ukrainian troops’ resistance in the town of Voznesensk. New attempted Russian airborne landings in the Mykolaiv area were defeated by Ukrainians during the reported period.
