Outreach Seminar – “Raising Awareness about European Union in Georgia”

On the 3rd of May, 2006 the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies organized an outreach seminar, in Telavi, on the issues of European Integration hosted by Telavi State University. Seminar was conducted under the aegis of Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies project “Raising Awareness about European Union in Georgia”. Project was prepared under the call for EU Commission educational and cultural program Jean Monnet.

An intensive seminar covered issues fundamental to European integration: history of European integration; EU institutions; European Common Foreign and Security Policy; Transportation and Energy policy of the EU and EU-Georgia relations – Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and European Neighborhood Policy.

Students expressed fascinating interest towards the seminar and posed many interesting questions during the Q&A sessions Maps and many other materials were distributed to each participant.

The foundation provided the University library with a reader, consisting of the extended lectures on the topics covered during the seminar, as well as different brochures and journals on EU subject, provided by the EU delegation to Georgia. Lectures were conducted by senior fellows of Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies, Mr. Kakha Gogolashvili, Mr. Archil Gegeshidze, research fellows Mr. Sergi Kapanadze and Mrs. Eka Akobia, as well as the President of the Center on European Integration, Mr. Vasil Chkoidze.

Under the aegis of this project similar seminars will be conducted in other parts of Georgia, namely in Kutaisi, Zugdidi and Batumi.

The overall aim of the project is to raise awareness about EU in Georgia, as well as to trigger research interests of Georgian students towards the issues of European Integration.
